What is a Fraction?

What is a fraction? A fraction is essentially a way to represent division of a “whole” into “parts”. A fraction has the form:

Numerator
___________
Denominator

The numerator is the number of parts in the fraction.

The denominator is the total number of parts of the whole object.

You should always remember that the denominator can never be 0 because you cannot divide by 0.

An example of a fraction:

You have 5 jelly beans in a bag so each jelly bean is 1/5 of the bag content. The whole bag has 5 fifth parts. That can be written as: 1=5/5. There are three red jelly beans and 2 yellow jelly beans. Therefore, the three red jelly beans represent 3/5 of the bag.
