Separating Love and Teaching

One of the hardest challenges for homeschooling parents is to separate love from teaching. What we mean by this is that as a teacher, you must be professional, detail oriented, and sometimes a little tough, and as a mother that may not be the way you wish to be.

It is important that when you begin to home school a child, that you explain to them that your roll as a parent will be different. While some areas of teaching schoolwork and parenting will correlate, others won't - so it is important that you outline this to your child. This will allow you to work within a framework that is setup for success.

The next thing you must do is prepare yourself for the work. Granted, your kid is going to be the one learning, but you as the teacher have to be prepared with a lesson plan. In addition, you must mentally prepare yourself for your roll as a teacher as it certainly isn't easy and it will require patience and focus on your part.

Next, you must get your home in order. In the past, you may have set your home up in a certain way for your family, but now, you need to designate and highlight the learning area for which where you will be teaching. Remember, when a child is homeschooled, they don't have a classroom, so the parent has to be sure that a classroom and positive teaching setting is in place. And even if this effects the design and organization of the way you envisioned your family home - it is still important to designate a learning area.

Lastly, and most importantly, you have to learn to be critical of your child. Not critical is the sense of putting them down, but critical in the sense of pointing out when they are wrong. In parenting, sometimes you have to accept a flaw of your child and respect that it is just the way they are. However, as an educator, your child will need to get to certain levels each year, and in getting your child to these levels, you must, on occasion, be critical of your child.

Homeschooling is a challenge, but it can have outstanding rewards for yourself. At the same time, it can be reat for your child. Just be sure to take it very seriously and try to make an effort to separate your roll as an everyday parent with your roll as a home school teacher.
