Celebrate Memorial Day: Corrugated flag
This project requires some adult supervision because you will be cutting corrugated tin sheets. But the results are a beautiful family decoration that can be used from year to year, or year-round.
Project Supplies:
Corrugated tin sheet 12" x 21"
Metal Paints in Bright Blue, Deep Red, White
Paint brush suitable for use with metal paints
Vinegar
Stove pipe wire, 36"
X-acto® knife
Old toothbrush
Nail
Fine sandpaper
Project Instructions:
1. Prepare the tin by making sure it is clean and wash with vinegar. Let dry.
2. Measure an area 9" long and 6" wide in the upper left corner. Use the 3-4" brush to paint this area with Bright Blue paint. Paint the stripes of the tin with red and white.
3. Make a stencil of a star by using a piece of medium weight cardboard (cereal box will work fine). Cut out the star using an X-acto knife. Position the star stencil onto the center of the blue area. Paint the star with White paint. Two coats may be necessary for good coverage.
4. For a aged look to your tin design you could take paint color similar to “Espresso Brown” and an old toothbrush to spatter paint onto the flag, as you desire. Let dry well.
5. Make a hole using a nail in the upper right and the upper left corners.
6. Twist the stovepipe wire around a brush handle, pull out the brush handle, then somewhat straighten. Attach one end of the wire to the right hole in the tin and one end of the wire into the left hole for hanging.
7. Use fine sand paper to remove the paint here and there to make the flag appear worn and old, if you desire. This is often referred to as the “Americana” look.
