Cotton Ball Clay

This is a super easy and super fun concoction that you can use in your dioramas, on three dimensional maps, free standing sculptures, etc. You can have “snow” year round.

Project Ingredients:

3 cups cotton balls
2 cups water
2/3 cup flour
5 to 7 drops of food coloring, if desired

Project Directions:

1. Tear cotton balls apart into small pieces.

2. Mix water and cotton together in a medium saucepan.

3. Slowly stir in flour … slowly so that it doesn’t clump.

4. Continue stirring and cook over low heat for five to seven minutes or until the mixture begins to stiffen.

5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and place the resulting cotton clay on a thick cloth towel or several layers of paper towels to cool.

6. Mold your cotton ball clay then allow to dry 24 hours or until hard.

Note: you can use cotton ball clay in the same way that you use paper mache. You may want to try molding the cotton ball clay around a frame or balloon in place of newspaper.
