Public Speaking Unit Study
”Oh no!!! You mean I have to speak in PUBLIC?! I don’t know how to give a speech!” Use this short unit study to get over the fear of public speaking and gain valuable skills to use in your chosen career, debating, or hobby … or just to help in expressing yourself better in general.
1. Prepare a written speech of 750 words.
a. Give the main idea or topic of the speech in one complete sentence.
b. Tell the kind of audience for whom it was prepared.
c. Describe your purpose. Tell what main idea you want the audience to remember about your speech.
d. Show the following:
1. The ideas list you used in preparing your outline.
2. The outline.
3. The final text.
e. Give this speech before an audience.
2. Give a 10-minute speech on a subject other than the one used in requirement 1. Use a visual or audio aid.
3. What is “tone of voice?” How does this affect a verbal presentation?
4. Give an impromptu talk of at least 2 minutes. Use a subject interesting to you but for which you do not have time to prepare.
5. Lead a discussion group and be able to keep the discussion going without it getting out of hand and off topic.
6. Read aloud a selection of 500 words you have never seen, using good annunciation and tone of voice to generate and keep interest.
7. Show you know parliamentary procedure by leading a discussion or meeting according to accepted rules of order; or answer questions on the rules of order.
8. Take place in a debate.
9. What are some things that can help people who are afraid of speaking in public? Are you afraid of speaking in public, even after participating in the previous activities? Consider what makes you apprehensive and then strategies for confronting and getting over your apprehension.
