Fun Food: Hot Curlers

This is a really fun recipe. The kids can shape the “curlers” before they are put in the muffin cups. You can also use store-bought or homemade ingredients, as you prefer. The kids get a real bang out of making and eating this nutritious snacks.

Ingredients:

1 (2.25 oz. Can deviled ham) OR homemade of same amount
1/2 cup shredded Swiss, cheddar, or Monterey Jack cheese
1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard
1 package (10) refrigerated biscuits OR homemade of same number
milk or water

Directions:

1. In a small bowl combine the deviled ham, shredded cheese, and the prepared mustard. Set aside.

2. Separate biscuits. Par or roll each biscuit into a four-inch circle. Spread each circle with about one tablespoon of the ham mixture. Roll up jelly-roll style.

3. Grease muffin pan. Place two rolled up biscuits, side by side, in each muffin cup, curving each into a U-shape with the open ends up.

4. Brush the rolls with a little milk or water.

5. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.

6. Remove from oven and serve warm.

Variations:

Try using buttermilk, cornmeal, wheat, or other flour biscuits in place of the regular canned biscuits. I've also heard that you could use canned crescent rolls, but you wouldn't roll this out.

Vary the type of cheese you use.

You can also try chicken sandwich spread, so long has the chicken is finely chopped.
