The Relative Size of the Planets
The sun is the center of our solar system. Can you name all nine planets that revolve around the sun? Do you know how big they are compared to one another? Here is a fun activity to demonstrate this.
Why does relative size mean? It means how big something is compared to something else. For example, compared to a whale you are very small; but, compared to an ant, you are enormous!! This is the same for planets. Compared to Jupiter, our Earth is rather small; but, compared to the planet Pluto, our Earth is very large.
In this activity, you will use every day objects to help you compare the size of the planets that revolve around our sun.
Project Supplies:
½ rice grain for Pluto
peppercorns for Mercury and Mars
peas for Venus and Earth
plums for Uranus and Neptune
grapefruit for Jupiter
large orange for Saturn
Directions:
1. First, remember that these objects are only models and only approximate the relative size of the planets to one another. But, they will still give you are pretty good comparison.
2. Put the objects in the correct order of the planets around the sun.
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
How many Mercuries do you think it would take to make up a Saturn or an Earth?
