Testing a Hypothesis
What is a hypothesis? A hypothesis is the answer you THINK you will get at the end of a science experiment. Below is an example of how to test a hypothesis.
How to test the hypothesis that "all plants need water" and "all plants need light."
Project Supplies:
four small plants that are alike
water
a cardboard box
sunlight
Project Directions:
1. Make four labels.
- WATER AND LIGHT
- WATER AND NO LIGHT
- NO WATER AND LIGHT
- NO WATER AND NO LIGHT
2. Place one label next to each plant. Do as the labels say for one week.
- put the cardboard box over the plants that say "NO LIGHT." But once a day lift the box to give a little water to the plant that says "WATER AND NO LIGHT."
- give both water and light to the plant that says "WATER AND LIGHT."
- give light but no water to the one that says "NO WATER AND LIGHT."
3. After one week, take note of the appearance of each of the four plants.
4. Write in your science journal what each plant looks like.
5. Now, think what you can do to make all four plants healthy.
- What do you think you can do?
- What are some of the other needs of plants besides water and light?
