Hobbies
Hobbies come in as many shapes and sizes as the people who enjoy them. The three basic kinds of hobbies are collecting hobbies, doing hobbies, and making hobbies.
Before staring a hobby, ask yourself these questions. Write down the answers and discuss them with your family or other adult.
§ Is the hobby fun?
§ Can I afford it?
§ Do I have the space for it?
§ Where will I do it?
§ Do I have time for it?
§ Is it something that will not harm the environment?
§ Are there safety or environmental factors to consider?
For a collecting type of hobby:
1. Collect enough items so that you will learn something about the subject. Organize your collection, including name or classification of each object. List when and where you acquired the object, how much it cost if applicable, and something special about each item.
2. Arrange, display, or mount your collection so that you are able to show it to others.
3. Find out something about other people who collect the same things you do. What are the clubs, organizations, or magazines for people with your hobby?
4. Read books or magazines about your hobby. Find out your hobby’s history. Are there other hobbies that are similar to yours? Have people made careers from this hobby?
For a doing type of hobby:
1. Practice your hobby. Demonstrate or try to teach your hobby to others.
2. Learn something about the history of your hobby and about others who share your hobby.
3. Find out about the kinds of careers that are related to your hobby.
4. Participate in something with other people who also share your hobby, for example participating in a musical performance, bird-watching, group camping, etc.
For a making type of hobby:
1. Make some samples of your hobby. Explain to others what is involved in your hobby and what skills you have learned.
2. Find out about other people who share your hobby. Attend an exhibit, read a book, or interview someone involved in your hobby.
3. Find out something about the history of your hobby.
4. Display, use, or organize your finished products and show others the work you have made.
