Assyrian Mythology

The Assyrian civilization that existed in northeastern Mesopotamia was wealthy and technologically sophisticated for the time.

Assyria’s capital, Nineveh, was a beautiful city built to withstand invasion. The outer wall was 200 feet high and wide enough for three chariots to drive side by side across the top.

Inside, the city was a maze of moats and walls to protect richly appointed temples. Lush gardens surrounded the palaces. Canals brought water to homes. Parks were stocked with wild game from Africa and nearby forests.

The best surviving record of Assyrian history is King Ashurbanipal’s library which held more than 22,000 clay tablets written in Sumerian cuneiform. These tablets contain information on battles, heroes, and legends.
