Plan a Sumerian Feast

The Sumerians were among the first culture to farm rather than just hunt and gather food. They also domesticated animals for food and labor.

Some of the foods the Sumerians ate were:

barley cakes
honey
goat’s milk
onions
dates
turnips
chickpeas
wheat breads
wild fowl
watercress
lentils
wild boar
cucumbers
pig
leeks
gazelle
garlic
goat’s meat
fish
eggs
mustard
lettuce
deer/venison


Which of these foods belong in the breads/cereals food group?

Which of these foods belong in the fruits/vegetables food group?

Which of these foods belong in the meat group?

Which of these foods belong to the dairy food group?

Which of the foods on the list would have been hunted or gathered from the wild?

Which of the foods on the list could have been grown or domesticated on a farm?

Pretend you are an ancient Sumerian chef. You have been hired by a rich family to plan a series of meals for a day long banquet. You will need to plan a breakfast meal, a mid-day meal, and an evening meal.

Plan each of these meals to be “balanced” so that they have something from several items from each food group. You may only use foods that the ancient Sumerians would have had access to.
