Sports: A Mini Unit

Bring a greater understanding and enjoying of a sport or sports in general by completing the activities in this mini unit. It covers rules, sportsmanship, history, and lots more.

1. Choose an individual sport, such as bowling, cycling, Frisbee, gymnastics, ice or roller skating, swimming, tennis, track and field, or tumbling. Learn the rules and be able to explain them to someone else. Practice the skill you chose until you feel comfortable doing them.

2. Show how to select, use, care for, and store the equipment and clothing needed to participate in your sport. Visit a sports equipment store or look in a sports catalog (off-line or on-line) to learn more about these items.

3. Read about the history of your sport. Discover in which countries this sport is popular and its famous past and/or present athletes.

4. Find out as muc has you can about your favorite sport hero and write and short story about him or her.

5. Learn and practice several warm-up exercises used to loosen the muscles of your body. Tell the purpose of each exercise.

6. Attend or watch on television two events featuring your sport. Note how the event is played, how it is scored, the number of players, the types of uniforms worn, the equipment and/or playing area used.

7. After activity #6, write or make something that describes your feelings about one of these event.

8. Find out what injuries occur most often from participating in this sport. Show first aid for at least two of these injuries. Decide on the safety tips you would give to help prevent these injuries.

9. Participate in this sport, if possible with others. Follow the rules of safety and fair play. Demonstrate your ability to cooperate with others. Find out how climate affects your ability to play.

10. Learn to play and teach two games that are similar to your sport. Just for fun, you might want to select a game that is played in another country.

11. Find out what the life of an athlete is really like. Search sources for information on the diet, exercise, and training needed for an athlete in this sport.

12. Learn about the types of tournaments and amateur professional opportunities are available for athletes in this sport.

13. Discover which sports are available for you and others in your community.

14. Read a sports story or collection of stories on sports.

15. Read a biography of an athlete or coach.

16. Read about the history of a sport or the Olympic games.

17. Find out the proper attire and/or equipment needed to participate in four different sports activities.

18. Discover the rules of fair play and safety when taking part in or watching sports. Decide what action should be taken if the rules are broken. Set a fair and safe example for other to follow.

19. Show that you are prepared to help an injured person. Be able to treat: a cut lip or skinned knee, a nosebleed, a broken tooth, a blister, a sprained ankle, a loss of consciousness.

20. Take a survey of at least ten people. Ask them what kind of exercise or sport they participate in and why they do it.

21. Be able to explain why exercise and sports participation are important to good health.
