Bird Food
With the approach of fall and winter, many birds will be making their yearly migration to warmer climates. For some of you, your birds will leave, for some of us, that means the birds are about to start arriving. But even in colder climates, some birds hang around all winter. Here is a bird food that uses only ingredients found in the kitchen, to share with our feathery friends.
A bird station makes for great observation skills training. It also is a plus when trying to find something to put in a nature journal during the cold months. Don’t be surprised if animals other than birds come by for a sniff or nibble.
Ingredients:
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 cup flour
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup raisins
½ cup vegetable shortening
1 cup powdered nonfat milk
Directions:
1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl.
2. Grease a baking pan and lightly flour.
3. Pour in the bird batter.
4. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 1 hour.
5. Let cool and then break into walnut sized pieces for the birdies to have.
