Marigold Dye

This is a fun homemade dye! Anytime you can grow marigolds is when you can make this dye. You can even make it in the middle of winter if you want to grow an indoor flower box of marigolds. The dye is a pretty yellow, but can be delicate in intensity if you pick the blooms too soon, or wait too late.

Materials:

2 cups marigold petals*
1 quart water
stove or heating source
large enamel or stainless steel (not aluminum) pot
study wooden or plastic stirring utensil
sieve
container to collect dye
material to dye

Directions:

1. Combine the marigold petals and water in the pot.

2. Soak overnight.

3. Simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Crush petals and simmer for another 15 minutes.

5. Strain the mixture and discard petals.

6. Let the material soak in the dye until the desired color intensity is reached.

*Best color comes from blooms that are fully opened before they begin to wilt.
