Books: A Mini Unit

Books, books, books. They are a treasure. Here is a unit to explore your library, books, and reading.

1. Explore your local library’s resources. Prepare a brochure about the library, a poster to encourage greater use of the library, or an advertising flyer to let the community know what the library has to offer. Be sure to include information on the kinds of books, tapes and CDs, exhibits and special programs, newspapers, magazines, and audiovisuals available for children and adults. Find out what help is available and what you can borrow from the library besides books.

2. Find out about the folktales, stories, poems, plays, and/or writers in a culture other than your own. You may find out this information by talking to someone from that culture, by searching in the library, or by watching a special television show.

3. Read a book(s) especially for this unit. After reading, tell someone about the book(s).

4. Write up an annotated list of at least ten books you believe a person your age would like to read. An annotated list includes title, author, publisher, and a short description of each book. Include different kinds of books in your list. Be sure that you have read the books you have listed.

5. Write an original short story of at least 100 words.

6. Write a different ending to a story or play you already know.

7. Design a set of books covers for three books or stories.

8. Create illustrations for a familiar story, folktale, or poem.

9. Ask your librarian to show you books illustrated by five children’s artists. Which artist did you like best? Why?

10. Look at illustrations of three or more nursery rhymes or ABC books to see which ones you think a little child would enjoy. Create your own illustrated ABC book for a child.

11. Community Service Project Idea: Collect books, paperbacks, and magazines appropriate for one age level. Give them to a library.

12. Select books, magazine articles, jokes, riddles, poetry, or short stories and make a tape of some selections to give to someone who may not be able to read at the present time.

13. Community Volunteer Idea: Volunteer to work at your local library. You could help with a children’s story time, senior citizen’s assistant, etc.

14. Find out about careers with books. You might visit with an author, poet, illustrator, editor, or someone who publishes books. Draw a diagram of how a book gets from the idea stage to the printed page.

15. Read a variety of stories, poems, or folktales that give you an idea of the literature of your country. What do these stories tell you about the way people lived, what kind of houses they lived in, what they wore, what they ate, etc.? Drwa a large map of your country and place drawings, authors, and books in various parts of the country or make a diorama of one example that you read.

16. Find out from your local librarian a list of Newbery Award winning books. If you have not read any of these books, read at least one. Then, make a decorative bookmark, book poster, or promotional flyer about Newbery books.

17. In a newspaper or other source from your community, read reviews of new books for your age level. Check one of these books out of the library, read, and review it yourself. Was your review the same as or different from the review you read?

18. Learn how to mend books and do simple bookbinding. Mend a favorite paperback book or do a bookbinding for your original writing.
