Eating Healthy: A Mini Unit

Today there are a wide variety of foods available to us. It wasn’t always like that. Now we have to consciously decide what we will and what we will not eat. That isn’t always an easy decision. There are dyes, preservatives, sugars, artificial flavors, etc. in our foods that weren’t there a couple of decades ago. Here is a simple mini unit that will explore the habits of good eating.

1. Keep a diary of the foods you eat for at least three days. Include any snacks you have.

2. Find out what the Food Groups are and, using your food diary, check to see if you had enough servings from each group.

3. Make a picture or word collage which tells about the foods you like to eat. Check you foods with the Food Groups. Which of your food habits need improving? Which are good habits?

4. Make up a game to help younger children learn about the major Food Groups. Play the game with someone.

5. Set up a display, make a mobile, or create a bulletin board promoting good eating habits.

6. Have a tasting party with some friends. Select two or three foods from each of the major Food Groups. Pick unusual foods so everyone gets to taste something they have never tasted before.

7. Over a period of time, try six food items that are new to you. Keep a record of the texture, taste, look, and smell of each one. Choose your favorite and tell someone about it.

8. Watch several hours of children’s television programming. Count the number of food commercials that are shown. In what way do commercials teach good or poor eating habits? Decide which products advertised are nutritious and which are not. Don’t just listen to what commercials say: find the products and read the labels.

9. Make a holiday or party favor for a younger sibling or friend. Fill your treat with nutritious, imaginative foods and nonfood items.

10. Plan, prepare, and serve a nutritious snack for a group. Give out the recipe or serving suggestions.

11. Take a survey of the food products that your family buys. Make a list of at least 20 of the foods. Find out who bought each one and why they chose it.

12. Collect pictures of different foods enjoyed in several different areas of the world. Try at least one food or recipe from another area of the world or culture.
