November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day
England’s Guy Fawkes Day (also known as "Bonfire Night") has been celebrated on November 5th since his capture in 1606. If you've ever wondered just what it is, here is some information to incorporate into a lesson.
Guy Fawkes, convicted for his part in the 'Gunpowder Plot' against the English Parliament and King James I, was executed. (Some of the English wonder whether they are celebrating Fawkes' execution or honoring his attempt to do away with the government!)
You can read more here about what children in England do on this holiday:

The events of 1605 are also remembered in a nursery rhyme, made more popular worldwide recently by the movie "V for Vendetta".
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot."
And here is another rhyme:
"Guy Fawkes, Guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.
By God's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.
And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!"
