Incorporating Cooking: Pizzelles (Italy)
An Italian specialty! Great for inclusion in a unit on Italy, geography of the Mediterranean, Rome, etc. A real treat that is fun, easy, and different.
Ingredients:
3 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. butter or margarine
2 tbsp. grated orange peel (optional)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. orange juice
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cardamom (optional)
1/4 tsp. salt
6 lg. eggs
Directions:
1. Put all ingredients in bowl with melted butter or margarine. Mix until smooth.
2. Drop by teaspoon onto a pizzelle iron (available at most kitchen specialty stores).
3. Close iron. Bake time depends on you counting to 10 like the clock ticks. Should be light brown. May need more time.
