How to Grow a Coffee Tree

This is a fun and unusual project. The flowers of the coffee tree are very fragrant! This will take a while, and remember to follow the instructions.

Directions: 1. Buy green coffee beans at a gourmet food or kitchen store. THESE CANNOT BE ROASTED BEANS OR THIS WILL NOT WORK!

2. The beans should sprout in 10 to 14 days.

3. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soaking wet. Dry soil will cause the tips and edges of the leaves to turn brown.

4. Give it some sun, such as in an east window, or back a few feet from a southern exposure.

5. When the baby tree is young, repot it yearly, moving it to a container that is one to two inches larger, until it is in an 8- to 10-inch pot.

6. After you have reached a pot size of about ten inches you will only need to top-dress it each year (remove the top one to two inches of soil and replace with fresh soil).

Remember, coffee trees grow in a very warm climate … one that can also be quite humid. If the weather begins to cool, bring your tree inside or put it in a greenhouse. This is especially important while it is very tender and young.

Have fun with this one. It could easily go along with a Unit Study on Brazil.
