Celebrating Independence Day:
Patriotic Pastries

What would celebrating Independence Day be without food?! Let you child help make these treats. Cooking is always a great way to work on science and math skills. You can also discuss what Independence Day stands for.

Ingredients:

1 sheet frozen puff pastry
1 can cherry or strawberry pie filling
1 can blueberry pie filling
confectioners' sugar
whipped topping

Tools to use:

measuring cups
knife
baking sheet
spatula

Directions:

1. Open the puff pastry package, and let it thaw on the countertop for about 15 minutes.

2. Cut a long strip of dough about 1/4 inch wide all the way down one side, and set the strip aside.

3. Cut the remaining pastry sheet into four 4-inch squares.

4. Place about 1/2 cup of pie filling in the center of each square. (Fill some with cherry or strawberry filling and some with blueberry filling.)

5. Once all the squares are filled, bring the pastry corners together, and carefully twist and turn the corners so they stay in place.

6. Place each pastry on the baking sheet.

7. Cut off a section of the strip of dough, and make a little star from it.

8. Pinch the star into the top of one of the pastries. Do the same for the other three.

9. Bake the pastries in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until golden brown.

10. Remove them from the oven.

11. Let them cool for 10 minutes.

12. Sprinkle the top of each pastry with whipped topping and confectioners' sugar, and you are ready to serve your patriotic treat.

These treats are not only good to prepare for Independence Day celebrations, but can be used for President’s Day, Abraham Lincoln studies (any US President for that matter), studies of the American Revolution, the US Civil War, patriotism, citizenship, etc. These would also work well if you were studying any country whose flag included the colors red, white, and blue such as Great Britain and/France.

Other unit studies that this would go well with at Easy Fun School are:

Unit Study of the American Revolution
Unit Study of the US Civil War
Unit Study on Citizenship
