Make-Your-Own Tortilla Chips - Mexico
Talk about a super simple activity that is great fun! This would go great with a study on Mexico. It could be part of a culminating activity, such as a fiesta.
Ingredients:
Can of vegetable oil cooking spray
12 corn tortillas
Shaker of salt or salt substitute
Tools:
Baking tray
Scissors
Serving bowl or basket
Directions:
1. Turn on the oven to 375 degrees.
2. Spray a baking tray with oil spray.
3. Make six piles of two tortillas each.
4. Use the scissors to cut each pile into bite-sized wedges or other shapes (not too tiny).
5. Spread the tortilla pieces onto the tray. The pieces can touch one another, but they should not be piled on one another.
6. Lightly spray the tortilla chips with oil spray. (Hold the can about 12 inches away.)
7. Sprinkle the chips lightly with salt or salt substitute.
8. Place the tray into the oven and bake for ten to 12 minutes. Then remove the tray.
9. Cool chips on the tray for about five minutes. Put them in bowl or basket.
