Pirate Treasure Chest - Treasure-Filled Cake
When working on unit studies or projects, I always like to close things with a culminating activity. Often this will include a “feast” with special food and a display of all the activities that we have completed. To culminate a study on pirates, why not have a seaside picnic with an edible treasure chest for dessert?
This is not as near difficult as you would think. In fact its so simple that you could throw it together for almost any kind of party or fun time.
Ingredients:
1 (12 ounce) Pound Cake (Entenmann's has one that is just perfect for this
1 (8 ounce) tub of whipped topping – thawed
Assorted "jewels" such as: fruit chews, candy necklaces, cubed prepared Jello, raspberries, gumdrops, or other small candies
1 pretzel rod, cut into 3 pieces
Miniature candy-coated chocolate candies (such as m-n-m’s)
Black licorice
2 pretzels cut into pieces
Directions:
1. Cut 1/2" horizontal slice off top of cake; set slice aside.
2. Carefully hollow out center of cake, leaving 1/2" shell on bottom and sides.
3. Reserve removed cake for snacking or other use.
4. Spoon 1 cup of the whipped topping into cake shell.
5. Frost sides with 1-1/2 cups whipped topping.
6. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
7. Just before serving, place assorted "Jewels" over whipped topping in cake shell.
8. Angle reserve cake slice over jewels using pretzel rod pieces to resemble an open chest lid.
9. Frost slice with remaining whipped topping.
10. Decorate with miniature candy-coated semi-sweet chocolate candies and licorice.
11. Add remaining pretzels to ends of chest for handles.
This also makes a wonderfully, different kind of birthday cake.
