Melon Seed Necklaces

One of the fun, yummy joys of summer is ice cold watermelon on a warm day. When I was little, my cousins and I would squirt the seeds at one another, count them, use them in our dirt pictures as soldiers or ants … and tell our younger siblings that if they swallowed a even one little seed, they’d grow a watermelon in their stomach. Oh, the things we do as children! Here’s something really fun to do with all the left over melon seeds.

Supplies:

melon seeds (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, etc)
sharp needle
strong thread

Directions:

1. Remove seeds from the fruit.

2. If the seeds are in a soft, sticky fruit flesh, or pulp, wash them in a strainer to remove the pulp.

3. Dry the seeds on a paper towel, or kitchen towel.

4. Use a needle and strong thread to string the melon seeds together.

You can make necklaces or bracelets with just the seeds, or you can add beads alternately with the seeds.

Variation(s): Instead of stringing the seeds together you could make a picture out of the melon seeds. First draw your picture on a stiff piece of cardstock paper or cardboard. Then glue the seeds onto it to finish your picture.

Make this a counting game. Count the seeds as you go, string them in groups, etc.
