Mini Unit: Sunny Summer Fun

One of the best things about summer is the sun; but, there are some things that you need to be aware of. With these activities, you can get your child involved in some summer fun, and at the same time teach them to take precautions and why.

Some activities you can do is:

1. Observe your pets for one week and note ways they protect themselves from the sun or during the heat of the day. How do you provide protection for your pets.
2. Put on different types of hats. Which hat gives you the most protection from the sun? Why?
3. Make some sun dried fruit, or even make your own Fruit Roll-ups. Fruit Roll-Ups
4. Make solar prints using light sensitive paper. Arrange objects such as leaves and flowers on the light-sensitive paper and expose the paper to sunlight for about five minutes. Remove objects and you will have a solar print.
5. Go to your local drug store and conduct a comparison shopping on different types of sunscreen products such as creams, gels, oils, and lotions. Are they water-resistance? Do any offer unique benefits? Compare SPF protection, cost, and instructions for environment.
6. Find out why Australia leads the world in skin cancer education and strategies. The website for the Anti-Cancer Foundation of South Australia.
7. Search out web sites (e.g., sun awareness) and find out the latest technological advances, skin cancer information, prevention, and protection. Test your knowledge on a variety of fun quizzes available on the internet. You can also research changes in the ozone layer.
8. Complete you Personal Skin Cancer Risk Profile. See how great a risk you are for developing skin cancer.
9. Create a poster on sun awareness using an original logo and artwork.

·wear long sleeves and pants made of tightly woven materials
·wear sunglassesto protect your eyes
·use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more on any skin that will be exposed during outdoor activities
10. Learn the definitions of the following words and how they apply to sun awareness: protect, block, cover up, shade, SPF, sunscreen, skin cancer, sun burn, hat, sunglasses, prevention.
11. Learn about UV rays and their exposure risks.
·Index 0-2 (minimal UV exposure) = 60 minutes to burn
·Index 3-4 (low UV exposure) = 45 minutes to burn
·Index 5-6 (moderate UV exposure) = 30 minutes to burn
·Index 7-9 (high UV exposure) = 15 minutes to burn
·Index 10+ (very high UV exposure) = 10 minutes to burn
12. Learn how to and how often to apply sunscreen and why it is so important.
13. Learn first aid responses to sun burn, dehydration, sun stroke, and over heating.
14. Find out more about the various kinds of skin cancer and how they are caused:
