Sun-Baked Apples - Solar Oven Project
Here’s another project to use the solar oven activity. This one’s really yummy.
SUPPLIES:
Solar Oven that is described in the "Natural Education Opportunities" listed in the "Article Archive" section of this website
Large piece of aluminum foil
Slices of apple
Brown sugar
Raisins
Cinnamon
Margarine
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place your sheet of aluminum foil on a flat surface. Put the apple slices and some raisins in the center of the foil
2. Sprinkle the apples with the brown sugar and the cinnamon.
3. Place a few dots of margarine on the top of the apples.
4. Fold up the aluminum foil so the ingredients won’t leak out.
5. Cook the apples in your solar oven using the same directions as for the hot dog or marshmallow that were in the solar oven article.
As a substitute for the brown sugar or in addition to, try adding some little red hot candies. Another variation would be to dribble maple syrup, pancake syrup, or molasses on your apples.
This is a great activity. In addition to the variations for apples, you may want to try using different fruits. Did you know that you can bake almost any fruit … bananas are a fun surprise, so are pears or peaches. You can also cook a vegetable packet this way, just alter the seasoning. Mmmmmm! Yummy!
