Cast a Faux Marble Sculpture

Casting a faux marble sculpture is a very fun activity for adults and children. It is a great addition to the study of the Renaissance era or a study of Rome (ancient or otherwise).

This recipe also makes a more durable product than ordinary plaster.

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons white glue
1/2 cup of water
plaster of Paris
tempera paint (green, blue, gray)*
mold**

Directions:

1. Mix glue and water in a medium-sized bowl.

2. Stir in emough plaster of Paris to create a frosting-like substance...in thickness and texture.

3. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan or bowl.

4. Pour a fairly thick layer of tempera paint over the top of the plaster mixture.

5. Gently fold in color to produce streaks. Do not blend or you won't get the marbling effect.

6. Pour the colored plaster mixture into your mold.

This recipe makes about one cup. For larger molds, you can double or triple the recipe.

*The colors listed are more realistic marble colors; however, I've also seen non-traditional colors such as flourescents used to create interesting effects.

**You can use any mold that would be suitable for casting regular plaster. Molds like this can be purchased at craft and hobby stores.
