The Simple Basics of Algebra

Algebra is a branch of mathematics where it uses the concept of unknown values, or variables. Unlike arithmetic, where all the values are known in number forms, in algebra, you have to find the unknown value using the algebraic equation. In an equation, there are numerical coefficients and variables. For example, in the expression 3x, 3 is a numerical coefficient and x is the variable. The combination of these, numerical coefficient and variable, comes up in algebraic equation. One example can be 3x+1=4. Unlike arithmetic where you have to find the answer to a set of operations on numbers, for algebra, you have to determine the value of the variable, which in this case, is x.

Algebra is a tremendously important subject for students. The subject is typically introduced in the 8th grade, and all subsequent math classes that the student will have in high school usually have some component of Algebra included.
