Fun Food: Rainbow Snow Slushies
This is a fun replacement for the old-time practice of eating snow in desserts like "snow cream". This recipe uses shaved or crushed ice.
Ingredients:
crushed or shaved ice to fill 2 tall glasses
2 cups milk or cream
optional flavor, colors or foods, such as food coloring, banana, fruit juices, berries
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons sugar
Directions:
1. Place ice cubes between two clean towels and hammer until crushed, or use the ice crusher. Place in the mixing bowl.
2. Add 2 cups of milk or cream to the bowl. Then, add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and 2 tablespoons sugar. Mix well with a whisk or fork.
3. Pour the sweetened ice in a blender and blend until slushy and smooth.
4. If desired, blend in any food color, fruit or fruit juice for additional flavor and color.
5. Pour the Snow Slushies into 2 tall glasses. It's fun to make several different colors of Snow Slushies, and then scoop or layer them into tall glasses in rainbow stripes. Layers of different flavors are fun to eat.
6. To garnish the tall glasses in a wintry way, serve the Snow Slushies on coasters or doilies made by hand. Make doilies by cutting white paper into at least one snowflake for each person, using the following directions or in any other imaginative way: Fold white paper in any fashion, such as in squares. Cut on the folds, removing large or small pieces of paper and leaving holes. Open the folded paper and a freehand, simple "snowflake" will remain.
7. Eat the slushies with long spoons.
