Title: Counting Nickels, Pennies, Dimes and Quarters

Objectives: Develop student’s ability to find the total value of the various forms of coins.

Instruction: Review the values of each individual coin. Give examples of adding two coins, then three, four, etc. Frequently ask for student participation to check for understanding.

Activity: Create a worksheet that gives students various combinations of nickels, dimes, quarters and pennies and requires adding these coins one by one until reaching the total.

Summary: Explain that this skill is both practical and useful. Share different situations where it would be useful for students to use their newly acquired skill. Make sure to congradulate the students on now being familiar with every domination of coin.

Title: Problem Solving with money

Objectives: Using word problems to apply the concept of adding and subtracting money

Instruction: Teach students the importance of carefully reading word problems and extracting the useful data. Identify key words that determine whether the problem is based on addition or subtraction. After working out a few word problems for demonstration write a problem on the board and allow students to attempt the problem on their own.

Activity: Give students a worksheet to complete, encouraging students to help their peers if possible. As a final activity, have students create their own word problem involving money and have them trade with other classmates. Have students solve their peer’s problems.
