Lyndon B. Johnson: A Presidential Unit

Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th President of the United States of America. LBJ, as he was often called, was also called "Light Bulb Johnson" because he went around the White House shutting off the lights because he claimed he didn't want to waste taxpayers' money.

Political Party: Democratic
Years Served: 1963 - 1969
Vice President(s): Hubert H. Humphrey
Name of his parents: Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. and Rebekah Baines
Wife's name: Claudia "Lady Bird" Alta Taylor (1912- ), on November 17, 1934
Yearly Salary as President: $100,000/year + $50,000 expense account
Physical Stature: 6 feet, 3 inches
State of Birth: Texas

LBJ caught the "political bug" early. As a young boy he would go along on the campaigns of his father who was a state legislator in Texas.

Johnson, an acknowledged great politician, accumlated many friends in his 24 years in Congress who could help him get things done. When he became president upon JFK's assassination, he continued Kennedy's programs. He also pushed Congress to pass environmental laws.

Despite all of the good things LBJ attempted to accomplish, he became unpopular by getting the USA further involved in the war in Southeast Asia. Because of this, even though he was technically still in a position to run for a second full term as president, he chose not to run.
