He was often called "The Great Engineer" and as a Quaker dealt with pangs of conscience during both World War I and World War II which he mitigated by setting up food distribution systems to get relief to people in war torn Europe.

"Herbert Hoover became an orphan when he was just eight years old. After that he lived with different relatives across the country before finally settling in Oregon.
Hoover was a mining engineer and quickly used his success career to become a millionaire. He was even Secretary of Commerce for both Presidents Harding and Coolidge. Herbert Hoover was also successful in his marriage. Lou Henry Hoover played an important part in her husband's political career.
But, despite all of this, when he became president himself he failed to realize that the country was in very deep economic trouble. In October 1929 the Stock Market crashed. This was the start of the historical period known as The Great Depression, which affected not only the USA but the entire world. People blamed Hoover for not being able to find ways to end the Depression and did not re-elect him.

Both Hoover and his wife spoke several languages. When they didn't want the White House staff to know what they were saying, they would speak Chinese.
