After World War II, where he served with distinction and honor, he followed his father into public service. Before becoming President, he served in many capacities including congressman, ambassador, head of the CIA, and vice-president.

"George Herbert Walker Bush was born into a wealthy family. He grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. His father later became a Senator from CT. As a boy George was a very good athlete. He enjoyed many sports, but baseball was his passion. Even as an adult he continued to be a sports enthusiast, enjoying golf, fishing, speedboating, tennis, pitching horseshoes, and hunting.
During World War II, he was the youngest torpedo bomber pilot in the navy during WWII. His plane was shot down, and he went on to win the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery.
After marrying Barbara Pierce and graduating from Yale, George took his young family to Texas where he wanted to be an oilman. After success in this industry, he decided to enter politics. He held a variety of offices in government before he became President. He was a Congressman, an ambassador to the United Nations and to China, the head of the CIA, and Vice-President under Ronald Reagan.
In August of 1990, Bush sent US forces to the Persian Gulf area to help protect the oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invasion from Iraq. This was called "Operation Desert Storm" and is was a success. The USA, in partnership with armies of other countries, pushed Iraq out of Kuwait, ending the Gulf War.
Despite such an enormous success, Bush was defeated for a second term when he ran against a charismatic, younger man of the Democratic party.
