Fall Fun: Spice Bags for Warm Drinks

This is a wonderful activity for teaching measuring and counting. It uses one thirds where most recipes use halves and quarters.

Ingredients:

8 sticks cinnamon, broken into small pieces
2 whole nutmegs, crushed
1/3 C. whole cloves
1/3 C. minced dried orange peel (or 1/4 C. ground)
1/4 C. whole allspice berries

Optional: garnish with cinnamon sticks, slice of orange, lemon peel

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Tie in sachets or small packets of 1 tablespoon each in a double thickness of cheesecloth. Store in an airtight container. You could give this as a gift quite easily by storing them in a canning jar and decorating lid and tie it with a big bow.

One sachet of the mixture will flavor 1 quart of cider, tea (or wine for adults). To use, simmer 1 quart of the chosen beverage with 1 sachet/packet for 20 minutes; ladle into mugs.
