The links below provide activities and information for a unit study based on the book Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. Ben Carson, MD, works medical miracles. Today, he's one of the most celebrated neurosurgeons in the world. This is the story of his inspiring odyssey from his childhood in inner-city Detroit to his position as director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 33. Carson is a role model for anyone who attempts the seemingly impossible as he takes you into the operating room where he has saved countless lives.
A Science Odyssey - You Try It - Probe the Brain Activity
How about some virtual brain surgery? Actually, in this situation, the surgeon has already removed the skull. It's your job to use an electric probe (i.e., mouse) to stimulate various spots on the brain's motor cortex and watch for body parts to move. When you map all 17 areas, there's a surprise response from your patient! This is a "You Try It" activity from the PBS series, A Science Odyssey. (Grades 4-8)

This website is available in English and Spanish. After choosing one or the other the site takes you to a page where you can decide what part of the body you would like to explore. Upon choosing the brain, you are then given the choice of looking at the brain book, the brain parts, or the narrated neurons. The brain book offers a detailed, illustrated guide to various brain facts and functions. The “brain parts” provides a close-up look at the various parts of the brain. Finally, the “narrated neurons” explores the brain's potential in a narrated tour. There is also an in-site search engine. This site is useful for students and teachers. (Grades 4-12)
